How to Stop Carrying What Is Not Yours
There is so much in the collective field right now.
Fear, uncertainty, pressure, grief, frustration, urgency, comparison, anger, noise. Sometimes we can feel it before we can name it. We wake up heavy. We walk into a room and sense tension. We scroll online and leave feeling contracted. We notice the nervous system bracing even when nothing immediate has happened in our personal life.
This is part of being human in a connected world.
We are feeling beings. We do not only process life through thought. We feel through the body, the skin, the heart, the cells, the breath and the subtle field. We absorb atmosphere. We pick up emotional weather. We respond to the collective, often unconsciously.
In Awakening to Earth’s Wisdom, there is a strong teaching around recognising what is ours and what is not ours. The breath becomes the place where we can notice, filter and release what we do not need to carry.
This is important because many sensitive, intuitive or spiritually open people mistake collective energy for personal failure.
They feel heavy and assume they are doing something wrong.
They feel anxious and assume they are broken.
They feel
overwhelmed and assume they are not strong enough.
But sometimes what is moving through the body is not only personal. Sometimes it is the world. Sometimes it is family. Sometimes it is ancestral. Sometimes it is the emotional field of a room, a community, a client, a partner, a child, a workplace or the collective moment we are living through.
Discernment begins with noticing.
The breath can help us ask, “Is this mine?”
Not from the mind alone, but from the body. When you pause and breathe, you may begin to sense whether something feels rooted in your own experience, or whether it feels like something you have absorbed. You may notice a pressure, a heaviness, a contraction, a fog, or an emotion that does not quite have a personal story attached to it.
This is where the practice becomes simple and powerful.
You do not need to analyse everything. You do not need to know the full origin of every feeling. You can begin with breath.
Inhale and acknowledge what is present. Exhale and release what is not yours.
You might say internally:
“That is not mine to hold. I release it with love.”
Or:
“I choose to filter and release what does not belong to my body, mind or energy system.”
Or:
“I return to my own centre. I breathe back into my own field.”
This is not rejection. It is energetic clarity.
There is a difference between compassion and absorption. You can care deeply without carrying everything. You can love people without taking on their pain. You can be aware of the world without becoming consumed by the collective fear within it.
The Earth models this for us.
She receives, transforms, composts and regenerates. She does not hold everything in the same form forever. She teaches us that release is part of life. What is heavy can be returned. What has served its purpose can be transmuted. What is no longer aligned can become nourishment for something new.
When we stop carrying what is not ours, we do not become less loving. We become clearer vessels for love.
Our compassion becomes steadier. Our intuition becomes cleaner. Our presence becomes less entangled. We can respond rather than react. We can support others without losing ourselves. We can participate in the collective field without being swallowed by it.
This is one of the quiet gifts of breath awareness. It brings us back to sovereignty. It reminds us that we have a choice in what we hold, what we release and what we contribute.
Put down what was never yours to carry.
Breathe it out and return to your own centre.
