Why isn’t my video or audio working in Zoom?
If your camera, microphone or speakers are not working in Zoom, there are a few simple things you can check.
Are you joining through your web browser?
If you clicked the Zoom meeting link without having the Zoom Workplace app installed, you may be
joining the meeting through your web browser.
When Zoom is running in a browser such as Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox, the browser must have permission to access
your camera and microphone. If access has previously been blocked or denied, your video or audio may
not work.
When prompted by your browser, select Allow for both your camera and microphone.
If you have already blocked access, you can change the permissions in your browser settings:
Google Chrome: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/2693767
Safari on Mac: https://support.apple.com/en-au/guide/safari/ibrwe2159f50/mac
Microsoft Edge: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/privacy/windows-camera-microphone-and-privacy
Firefox: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-manage-your-camera-and-microphone-permissions
You can also view Zoom’s instructions here: https://support.zoom.com/hc/en/article?id=zm_kb&sysparm_article=KB0078476
If changing your browser settings feels complicated, the simplest option is usually to download the
Zoom Workplace app https://zoom.us/download on your computer or join through the Zoom Workplace app on
your phone or tablet.
If your audio is not working
If you cannot hear anyone, or others cannot hear you:
- Make sure you are not muted in Zoom.
- Click the arrow next to Mute/Unmute and check that the correct microphone and speaker are
selected.
- Check that your computer volume is turned up and that any headphones or Bluetooth devices are connected correctly.
- In Zoom, go to Settings > Audio and test your speaker and microphone.
- Check that Zoom has permission to use your microphone on your computer or mobile device.
If your video is not working
If your camera is not showing:
- Make sure your video is turned on by selecting Start Video.
- Click the arrow next to Start Video and check that the correct camera is selected.
- Close any other applications that may already be using your camera.
- Check that Zoom has permission to access your camera.
- If you are joining through a browser, check that the browser also has permission to access your
webcam.
Still having trouble?
Try closing Zoom completely and reopening it, or restart your computer or mobile device.
If you are using a browser and your camera or microphone is still not working, the simplest option may be to download
the Zoom Workplace app and rejoin the meeting through the app.
You can also use the Zoom Workplace app on your phone or tablet if that is easier.
Test Zoom before your session
We recommend testing Zoom before your first live session, particularly if you are using a new computer, camera,
microphone or headphones.
The Zoom test meeting allows you to check your camera, microphone and speakers before joining your class.
